A 1914-1918 War Medal to the 50th Canadian Infantry Battalion KIA -(883330 A.L. CPL. J. KIRKHAM. 50-CAN.INF.). Naming is officially impressed. Semi-dark patina, original ribbon, edge nicks, contact marks, better than very fine. Footnote: John Kirkham was born on July 9, 1897 in Palmerston, Ontario, the son of George Kirkham and Mary Jane Kirkham. He was a resident of Knee Hill Valley, Alberta when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (883330) on May 20, 1916 in Innisfail, Alberta, at the age of 18, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Mary Jane Kirkham of Knee Hill Valley, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Farmer. Kirkham was an Acting Lance Corporal with the 50th Infantry Battalion "Calgary Regiment" when he was Killed in Action on October 22, 1918, at the age of 21. He is buried in Valenciennes (St. Roch) Communal Cemetery, Nord, France, Grave Reference: I. B. 28. and is commemorated on page 442 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
