A 1916 French Heroes of Verdun Medal
Bronze, hallmarked and marked "BRONZE" on the rim, engraver marked "CH.PILLET", illustrating two females representing France, one sword-wielding, the other holding a staff, fending off the sword-wielding Imperial German eagle, the Verdun gate and "RF" shield to the right and inscribed "VERDUN, ON NE PASSE PAS, MCMXVI" on the obverse, reverse illustrates three Generals (General Petain, General Nivelle, General de Curieres de Castelnau) at the top of an open-ended wreath, inscribed "A LA GLOIRE DES HEROS DE VERDUN, MCMXVI" in the centre, French Legion of Honour and WWI War Medal at the base of the wreath, 68 mm, extremely fine.
