Germany. A Battle Worn EK 1939 Second Class Field Converted to a Knight’s Cross
A standard Iron Cross 1939 Second Class; white metal cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; on a small loop for suspension; with its period original ribbon; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm; measuring 44.17 mm x 44.17 mm; weighing 18.7 grams; converted to be worn as a Knight’s Cross (often the award ceremony took place days or weeks after the announcement of the award), with an original Knight’s Cross loop; marked “935” for silver content; measuring 21.91 mm x 9.14 mm; weighing 1.5 grams; accompanied by a field-worn ribbon for a standard Iron Cross 1939 Second Class ribbon; the cross depicts light chipping to the paint on the obverse, with the reverse very well preserved, and with dark attractive patina on the frame from age. The loop is slightly bent out of shape, presumably from when it was attached to the Iron Cross. The ribbon is heavily stained from active wear; in overall very fine condition.
