Accompanied by a copy of his Service Record.Footnote: Alfred Mitchell was born on December 12, 1867 in Brighton, Sussex, England. He enlisted with the Royal Navy for ten years' service on December 12, 1885, on his eighteenth birthday. He later joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on January 18, 1902, re-enrolling on January 1, 1907, then again on October 18, 1911, scheduled to serve until January 17, 1917. With the war on, he continued to served in the Royal Fleet Reserve until he was discharged on June 4, 1921. During his career, he served with a number of ships, including: HMS St. Vincent, Manotaur, Bacchante, Sphinx, Duke of Wellington, Excellent, Hecla, Victory I, Vernon, Achilles, Euphrates, Bullfrog, Fearless, Sappho, Vindictive and Europa. Mitchell was a survivor from HMS Victoria, one of two Victoria-class battleships of the Royal Navy. On June 22, 1893, HMS Victoria collided with HMS Campertown near Tripoli, Lebanon during manoeuvres. Due to the damage sustained, she quickly sank, taking 358 crew with her, including the commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet, Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon. One of the survivors was second-in-command, John Jellicoe, later Commander-in-Chief of the British Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland.
