A First War Mark I CEF 116th Canadian Infantry Battalion Helmet

A First War Mark I CEF 116th Infantry Battalion "Ontario County Infantry Battalion" Helmet: British-made, steel, non-magnetic, with a raw edge, in grayish-blue with a smooth finish, illustrating a hand inscribed 116th Infantry Battalion badge in navy blue paint on the front. Inside, steel-framed cradle supporting a blackened canvas liner with underlying burlap support and leather backer, mesh support with drawstring, padded liner in the dome, stamped "BS 60" ("BS" indicating the manufacturer, W. Beardmore & Company Limited of Glasgow (1916-1919); and "60" the steel batch number) on the underside of the helmet at the back. The leather chinstrap has hardened with age but remains intact, while the hardware on both sides also remains intact. Helmet measures 287 mm x 305 mm x 120 mm, exhibiting a few moderate dents on top, surface rust and paint wear overall, touches of white paint on the front, the canvas liner with limited wear. As worn. 

Footnote: The 116th Infantry Battalion was raised in Ontario County with mobilization headquarters at Uxbridge under the authority of G.O. 151, December 22, 1915. The Battalion sailed July 23, 1916 with a strength of 36 officers and 943 other ranks under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel S. Sharpe. The Battalion served in France and Belgium, replacing the 60th Battalion on February 11, 1917 with the 9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division. It was disbanded on September 15, 1920. (C:4)
