A First War Medal Trio to the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters - 1914-15 Star (11116 Pte J.H. COLE. 1/CAN DIV:H.Q.); British War Medal (11116 PTE. J.H. COLE. 1-CAN. DIV. H.Q.); and Victory Medal (11116 PTE. J.H. COLE. 1-CAN. DIV. H.Q.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, dark patina on the BWM, contact marks and surface wear, very fine. Accompanied by a miniature group of same: 1914-15 Star (bronze, 20 mm x 25 mm); British War Medal (silver, 18 mm); Victory Medal (bronze, 17.8 mm), mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, marked "SPINK & SON Ld LONDON", dark patina on the BWM, contact marks and surface wear, miniatures also very fine. Footnote: John Henry Cole was born on January 7, 1880 in Essex, England. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 4th Infantry Battalion, on September 22, 1914, at Valcartier Camp, at the age of 34, naming his next-of-kin as Mrs. J. Cole of Southampton, Ontario, stating that he had eight years' previous service with the Royal Field Artillery, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Labourer. The Battalion was raised in Central Ontario with mobilization headquarters at Camp Valcartier, Quebec under the authority of P.C.O. 2067, August 6, 1914. The Battalion sailed October 3, 1914 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel R.H. Labatt, with a strength of 42 officers and 1,084 other ranks. The Battalion served in France and Belgium with the 1st Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Division. Private Cole was later transferred to 1st Canadian Division Headquarters.
