THORARINSON. 44-CAN.INF.); and Memorial Cross, George V (830507 - Pte J. THORARINSON). Naming is officially impressed on the Pair and engraved on the MC. Un-mounted, MC with pinback hanger and a dark patina, light contact, near extremely fine. Accompanied by his Memorial Plaque (JOHN THORARINSON), in its carton of issue. Footnote: John Thorarinson was born on February 4, 1889 in Gimli, Manitoba, the son of Thor Thorarinson and Sigridur Thorleifson. He signed his Attestation Paper on January 10, 1916, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 26, naming his next-of-kin as his stepfather, Frederick Fregrickson, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Farmer. While with the 44th Infantry Battalion in France, Thorarinson was Killed in Action during the Battle of Arras on May 6, 1917, at the age of 28 and is remembered with honour at the Vimy Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France. At the base of the memorial, these words appear in French and in English: "TO THE VALOUR OF THEIR COUNTRYMEN IN THE GREAT WAR AND IN MEMORY OF THEIR SIXTY THOUSAND DEAD THIS MONUMENT IS RAISED BY THE PEOPLE OF CANADA." Inscribed on the ramparts of the Vimy Memorial are the names of over 11,000 Canadian soldiers who were posted as "'missing, presumed dead" in France. He is commemorated on page 339 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
