A First War Period Austrian Military Order of Maria Theresa by V. Mayer

Knight’s Cross, in silver gilt and enamels, the last official WWI Model by maker “V. Mayer's Söhne” (circa 1917-1918); cross measures 29.9mm x 33.0mm, marked “VM” on suspension arch, also marked on suspension arch “A” and with silver hallmark (suspension ribbon loop also marked “A”); a textbook example by this maker, with original ribbon as worn, in extremely fine condition, and very rare.

Footnote: V. Mayer's Söhne was a well-known Austrian Imperial maker of a wide variety of awards during 19th and 20th Century, and an official maker of the most prestigious Austrian Imperial Military Award – the Military Order of Maria Theresa. It’s interesting to note that WWI examples of this award are rare, as the Order Chancellery used older models throughout the Great War, and as a result, it is easier to find Napoleonic period order then WWI manufactured order. The company “V. Mayer's Söhne” closed its doors due to economic hardship in 1922.
