A First War Victory Medal to the Royal Garrison Artillery - (2. LIEUT. R.W. GALLACHER.). Naming is officially impressed. Contact marks, better than very fine. Accompanied by a copies of his Index Card (acknowledging his eligibility for the BWM and VM) and two pages from the London Gazette. Footnote: Richard Watson Gallacher was born in 1894, the son of James and Martha Gallacher (nee Watson) of Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was formerly with the Army Service Corps (DM2/168818) before receiving a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Garrison Artillery, Special Reserve on August 19, 1917, then promoted post-war to Lieutenant on February 19, 1919 (London Gazette 3369, March 12, 1919). He relinquished his commission as Lieutenant, RGA SR on August 24, 1920 (London Gazette 42499, p. 16, August 26, 1920) and was residing down the street from his parents in Galston. He married Anne Anderson, on August 7, 1929, with both of them employed at the time as school teachers. He was living with Anne in Muirkirk, Ayrshire but did not get to enjoy life as a married man with his new bride, as he died of cardiac failure while working at Higher Grade School, Muirkirk the following year, on September 12, 1930, at the age of 36. Gallacher was also awarded the British War Medal, which is not included here.
