A Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 by Klein & Quenzer
Offered is a fine example of a Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 (Ritterkreuz). The Knight’s Cross features a regulation silver frame in the shape of a cross pattée that is marked “800” centrally on the edge of the upper arm, with a blackened matte eggshell magnetic iron core. It features a full loop suspension ring, along with a double-looped ring for ribbon suspension that is clearly marked “800” and “65” for “Klein & Quenzer of Idar-Oberstein”. The cross itself is not marked by Klein & Quenzer, but exhibits the characteristics of this manufacturer, including the ribbed bordering, the raised central mobile swastika, as well as the reinstitution date “1939” in raised numbering on the obverse of the lower arm and the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm of the reverse. This Knight’s Cross measures 48.96 mm x 48.42 mm, and weights 30.6 grams. It is accompanied by its full-length period original neck ribbon, constructed of fine black-white-red-white-black vertically ribbed weaving. It appears to have been previously sewn shut, but is now open. It measures approximately 57 cm x 4.5 cm and weighs 9.4 grams. Overall, this Knight’s Cross depicts light patina from old age, with the blackened core showing some very light decay of the paint. The ribbon is lightly soiled from wear, but completely intact, overall very fine condition. It is accompanied by a full certificate of authenticity by Dietrich Maerz. (C:169)
