A Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 by Steinhauer & Lück; Type-A Micro “800” Version

Offered is an excellent example of a Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross 1939 by Steinhauer & Lück of Lüdenscheid. This Knight’s Cross features a regulation silver frame that is marked with a micro “800” centrally on the edge of the upper arm. Although unusual for this maker, this specific Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross features a black, glossy, iron (magnetic) core. It is not officially maker marked by Steinhauer & Lück’s trademark incuse relief “4”, but exhibits the manufacturing characteristics and die flaws of a textbook Type-A Knight’s Cross, known among collectors as the “Micro 800” version, such as the die-flaws on the ribs of the cross, that appear to be forming “little bridges” across the ribs. It features a full loop suspension ring, along with a silver double-looped ring for ribbon suspension that is marked “800”. The numerals “1939” on the obverse, and “1814” on the reverse are identical to proven examples of the same period. 48.24 mm x 48.30 mm, and weighs 30.8 grams, with its suspension ring. It is accompanied by a shortened correct replacement neck ribbon that measures approximately 253 mm x 50 mm. It is presented with its original case of issue constructed of heavy pressed paper with a textured black faux leather (leatherette) exterior, a satin-lined interior lid, as well as a black velvet recessed medal and bed for the seating of the Knight’s Cross and its neck ribbon. The interior fabric hinge cover is fully preserved, with the spring catch with stud release also fully functional, as well as the exterior metal hinge. 146 mm x 78 mm x 21 mm. Overall, the Knight’s Cross appears lightly worn, with light wear to the black paint. The frame has been previously cleaned to restore its former shine, with some paste residue in the crevices of the core. The case has stood the test of time extremely well. Overall better than very fine condition. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity by Dietrich Maerz outlining the authenticity of the cross as well as the case.
