A Memorial Cross to the 25th Battalion CEF Killed Outside Lens - (877754 PTE A. McDONALD). Naming is officially engraved. Light contact, extremely fine. Accompanied by copies of his Index Cards, Attestation Paper, Service Records, Medical Records, Pay Records and Will, along with assorted research papers. Footnote: Archibald McDonald was born on May 3, 1885 in Dominion No. 6, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He signed his Attestation Paper with the 185th Infantry Battalion "Cape Breton Highlanders", on March 15, 1916 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Mary Ann McDonald of Dominion No. 6, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was married and that his trade was that of Miner. The Battalion was raised in Cape Breton under the authority of G.O. 69, July 15, 1915 and had its mobilization headquarters at Broughton, Cape Breton. The Battalion sailed on October 12, 1916 from Halifax, Nova Scotia aboard the S.S. Olympic, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel F.P. Day, arriving in Liverpool, England on the 18th. After seven months in England, McDonald was transferred to the 25th Infantry Battalion on May 27, 1917, arriving at the Canadian Base Depot in France on the 28th and joining his unit in the field on June 16th. McDonald was with the 25th Infantry Battalion when he was Killed in Action three weeks later, on July 6, 1917 near Lens, France, at the age of 22. He is buried in Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference: XIX. F. 10. In his Will, dated November 28, 1916, he left his entire estate to his wife, the remarried Mary A. Steele (formerly McDonald). She received his Plaque and Scroll, along with his Trio of Medals (none of which are included here), in addition to his Memorial Cross. She was also paid a War Service Gratuity of $100.00.
