Mexico, Republic. A Naval Dagger, by Carl Eickhorn, Solingen, c.1935
Mexico; Measuring 610 mm, with the scabbard on, this dagger features a 465 mm nickel-plated steel blade, magnetic, with unsharpened edges, remaining bright and crisp, and having a very sharp tip. It incorporates ornate engraving on both sides and the spine. The obverse has the Mexican eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake in the centre, flanked by a small trophy of arms at either end, interlaced with an ornate design. The reverse has a large trophy arms with armour, flags, drum, mortars, crossed cannons and cannonballs near the crossguard, with a smaller trophy of arms at the opposite end, interlaced with an ornate design. The blade's reverse ricasso is maker marked Carl Eickhorn, Solingen with the company's semi-stylized squirrel insignia, used between 1933 and 1935. The blade itself exhibits a beautiful engraving with faint scratches overall, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, along with scattered surface wear, exhibiting a natural shine, better than very fine. The felt washer has been lost to time. The fittings are bronze, with an oval insignia affixed to the obverse of the crossguard bearing the Mexican eagle perched on aprickly pear cactus devouring a snake, framed by a half-wreath of oak leaves and laurel leaves and surrounded by the inscription "REPUBLICA-MEXICANA", the reverse of the crossguard with a blade release button, with acorns on either end of the crossguard. Above the crossguard is a bronze ferrule butting an ivory-coloured celluloid grip, which is smooth, very lightly contacted, with seven rows of tightly wrapped twisted bronze wire in the grooves. The pommel is designed with an ornately crafted eagle's head, with a large ring placed through the beak, the dagger measuring 585 mm in length overall. The black leather-wrapped scabbard has a bronze chape and locket, each with an ornate design, both of which have lost their staples affixing them to the body of the scabbard. There is a frog stud on the locket, while the chape has a flattened u-shaped finial, the throat plate secured in place, the scabbard measuring 470 mm in length. Very fine.
