A Numbered German POW Camp ID Tag for Allied Soldiers Housed at the Stalag I-B Hohenstein Camp

A POW Camp ID Tag for allied prisoners housed in the Stalag I-B at Hohenstein. The tag is crafted in zink with the obverse being stamped “Stalag IB Nr. 28937 R” on both side of the slotted disk. It measures 60 mm x 40 mm and is in extremely fine condition with the writing being fully legible.

Footnote: The Stalag I-B Hohenstein was a German Second War POW camp located 2 kilometers west of Hohenstein (East Prussia - now Olsztynek, Poland). It was built in 1939 to house Polish soldiers that were captured during the initial invasion in September, 1939, but also housed Serbian, Belgian, French, Italian, and Soviet Soldiers from 1941 onwards. During the harsh winter of 1941-1942, 25,000 people are said to have died there due to malnutrition, maltreatment, and recurring typhoid epidemics. Overall, between 50 and 55 thousands people were buried in 500 mass graves.
