This is a scarce Sardinienschild Mützenabzeichen; in silvered bronze; depicting the island of Sardinia with a superimposed diagonal sword on-top, with topographical features of the island and the embossed names of the two major towns on the island “Olbia” and “Caglian”; diagonal pinback; measuring 27.97 mm x 16.37 mm; extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The 90th Panzer Grenadier Division was formed in Sardinia (an island in the Mediterranean) in June 1943. The semi-official cap badge was awarded to members of the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division who fought against allied tank advances. The division was transferred to Sicily in the fall of 1943 and was deployed to all the major campaigns of Italy, including Cassino, Anzio, and the Battle of the Po River, until it was destroyed at Bologna in April 1945.
