Spain, Franco Period. A Seldomly Awarded Military Merit Medal in Diamonds, c.1938
(Medalla Militar). Insituted in 1918 by Alfonso XIII of Spain. A solid silver medal, the obverse medallion presents a fight facing female figure holding a wreath, with the sun setting in the left background and a shield with a lion face on the on the right, the medallion is surrounded by a ring of 40 old cut genuine diamonds and a silver wreath with a rampant lion on each side, a small banner at 6 o’clock reads AL MERITO EN CAMPANA, the reverse presents the Spanish coat of arms overlaid on an eagle with outstretched wings, and matching silver wreath and rampant lions, marked on edge at 6 o’clock with a silver fineness star denoting .915/1000 after 1934, and a Spanish mark denoting manufacture in Baleares used between 1934-1988, measures 45.60mm (w) x 48.90 (h – inclusive of integral ring), weighs 49.5 grams (including ribbon), worn on original ribbon with silver gilt pinback, lovely dark patina, residue surrounding the diamonds, ribbon lightly soiled. Spain’s highest bravery decoration, this class in diamonds was awarded less than ten times - an extremely rare award in very fine condition. Accompanied by a period hard shell case of issue marked Cejalvo, Madrid. Footnote: This medal was awarded to members of the Spanish military service, independent of rank, for exceptional heroism on the field of battle.
