A Unique First War Royal Flying Corps Side Cap by Thresher & Glenny Ltd

The is an interesting cap with unique features. As evident from the additional lug hole, this cap was indeed fitted with a different cap badge at an early point. This is very likely due to the owner being transfered into the RFC from a different regiment. More evidence of this can be found in the uniquely engraved buttons. Fabricated from an olive green-khaki cotton-wool blend with fold down flaps on either side, the flap on the right side held up with a brown metal hook, the flap on the left side held up with a black metal hook, both of which are fed through embroidered loops, the front with two 14 mm wide flat-faced buttons, one is an original bronze button which is marked "SUPERIOR QUALITY" on its reverse, the other is a bronze gilt replacement button with worn markings on the reverse, both engraved with the George V crown above "R.F.C." holding the two ends of the flaps together, a 38.8 mm x 44.5 mm bronze Royal Flying Corps badge on the left side, held in place via intact lugs and a pin on the inside of the cap. The inside is lined in brown khaki cotton with a 22 mm wide soft white sweatband, with a maker's label sewn on the left side inscribed "Thresher & Glenny Ltd. Outfitters / 152 & 153 STRAND / LONDON, W.C.". The cap measures 110 mm x 270 mm, nice texture in the fabric, quality stitching on all seams, maintaining its natural colour, lightly soiled exterior, extensive soiling on the interior from active use, very fine.
