A Unique Iron Cross 1914 First Class; Silver Backplate Version
A unique Iron cross 1914 First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1914 1.Klasse); in silver (marked “800” for silver content); a cross pattée of multi-piece construction with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a ribbed border; the obverse with a raised central “W”, with the reinstitution date “1914” in raised numbering on the lower arm, and the royal crown on the upper arm; vaulted; the reverse with two threaded studs, one on the upper arm, and one on the lower arm, a backing plate, and a single nut (the other has been lost through time); measuring 19.2 grams in total; with light to moderate contact marks to the core of the cross, with patina on the silver frame from age; in overall near very fine condition.
