Morocco, Kingdom. A Late 19th Century Moroccan Koumiya

Measuring 392 mm in length with the scabbard on, this koumiya features a 225 mm long curved double-edged steel blade, magnetic, with sharpened edges and having a very sharp tip, the one edge with a spine that starts at the crossguard and terminates at the mid-point of the blade. The blade exhibits multiple contact marks from active use, with some surface rust. There is a wooden washer protruding from the handle at the base of the blade. The handle itself is fabricated from silver on the obverse and bears a deep red stone embedded within a rectangular frame at the narrow point of the handle, flanked by raised diamond-shaped structures on either side of the stone, one near the crossguard, the other at the centre of the very wide pommel, with ornate engravings throughout, complemented by selected areas in steel blue enamels, the pommel nut in engraved brass. The sides and reverse of the handle are fabricated from brass, with ornate engravings throughout, the narrow point of the handle with four cylindrical posts, two on either side, with the tops of each post capped with silver domes and flank the rectangular frame housing the red stone on the obverse, the koumiya measuring 372 mm in length. The obverse of the scabbard is in silver, with ornate engravings throughout as per the handle, three raised diamond-shaped structures on the body, similar to those used on the handle, with two bands in silver with red enamels flanking the centre structure, the upper part of the scabbard exhibiting a large band in silver with teal blue and yellow enamels, the areas on the body surrounding the latter band with red and steel blue enamels in various locations. There are two large ornate voided posts protruding from either side near the open end, each of which houses a large brass suspension ring, the chape curved at the far end and is finished with a pointed finial. The reverse of the scabbard is in brass, with ornate engravings throughout, the brass extending along the outer edge of the body of the scabbard along the chape and bearing an ornate scalloped design. The body of the scabbard has a pin appearing near the throat, secured to a piece of wood that is visible inside the scabbard itself, the scabbard measuring 250 mm in length. Extremely fine.
