Instituted October 22, 1960. In silver, a white enamel five point star with ball finials, with five double ended smooth rays in each quadrant, the obverse presents a silver field with an embossed lion and star, surrounded by a red enamel ring with the inscription REPUBLIQUE DU SENEGAL UN PEUPLE UN BUT UNE FOI, reverse presents an enamelled Senegal flag surrounded by a wreath, reverse is otherwise plain, suspended from crossed palm leaves on the ring, measures 41.7mm (w) x 45.6mm (h – including integral square suspension), weighs 21.1 grams, enamels intact, worn on original ribbon, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This Order is conferred to national and foreign individuals, in the military and civil sphere, for exception merit and service to the Republic of Senegal. It went through modifications in 1962 and again in 1964, thus there are some variation in the attributes of the Order.
