An American Type III (1943-1945) Purple Heart with Boutonniere in its Case of Issue
Two-piece construction in the shape of an heart in bronze gilt and purple coloured plastic; the obverse with a leftward facing bust applied to the centre of George Washington; with the coat of arms of George Washington directly above the heart, consisting of an enameled white shield with two red bars and three starts in chief between twigs of green leaves; with the reverse inscribed “For Military Merit”; with a horizontally pierce ball for suspension; with its period-original ribbon with slot brooch and horizontal pinback; unmarked; measuring 43.20 mm x 35.09 mm; weighing 33.4 grams; extremely fine condition. Accompanied by its boutonniere with white and purple enamels; unmarked; measuring 17.08 mm x 3.53 mm; enamels with two cracks but better than fine condition. With its period-original presentation case constructed of heavy pressed paper with a lightly textured black faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the exterior of the lid embossed in golden lettering with “Purple Heart” and two elaborate curved lines along the edges, with a straight golden lines on the sides of the lid; the inside lid lined with satin and the bottom in velvet; intact fabric hinge cover with a functional spring-loaded exterior hinge; measuring 165 mm x 87 mm; overall extremely fine condition.
