An Early Pilot’s Badge to Pilot Downed May 19 1940, France - A so called “J-1”, wreath in nickel silver, eagle in patinated tombac, thin wreath, measures 65.13mm (w) x 53.05mm (h), weighs 30.2 grams, with period repair to catch, marked on reverse C.E. Juncker Berlin S W, with nice old patina, textbook example, in worn condition. Footnote: Pilots Badge of Friedrich Weidenbach, Unteroffizier Pilot of Kampfgeschwader 51. He was wounded in action on 19 May, 1940 when his He 111 crashed near Seilles during the French Campaign. The reverse is engraved schülerkomp. Neukuhren; a school founded in 1936 outside of Königsberg that trained with the Heinkel 111 as well as others. An early badge owned and worn by perhaps one of the first Luftwaffe Casualties of operations in France.
