Military intelligence “Abwehr” member Otto award document Eastern Front Medal; An award document for the Eastern Front Medal. It measures 140x201mm, extremely fine condition with folding crease and a few age spots. The recipient is Obergefreiter (Senior Lance Corporal) Otto Ofzarek. The document is dated to December 7, 1942. It is signed by proxy, the name is indecipherable. The Eastern Front Medal (Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42) was awarded to those serving in Russia during Operation Barbarossa. Footnote: Ofzarek was part of the Abwehrgruppe Nord (Defence Group North), Abwehrkommando (Defence Detachment) 304. This unit was part of the Heeresgruppe (Army Group) C, which was renamed Army Group North just before the attack on Russia, in which it participated. Abwehr (Defence) was a military intelligence operation, established in 1920. During the war, Abwehrkommandos were tasked with securing documents, finding and detaining foreign intelligence agents, interrogating P.O.W.s, and establishing espionage networks, immediately after a new area was secured and occupied.
