Germany, Luftwaffe. A Flight Instructor’s Flight Logbooks and Documents
This is an extremely fine group of Luftwaffe Flight Logbooks belonging to Oberfeldwebel Max Knaak. Max Knaak was born October 23, 1914, and flew over 2000 flights between August 15, 1941 and April 7, 1945. The logbooks, two of the three which are completely filled, state the name of the student, the plane, flight number, purpose of the flight, take-off place and time, landing place and time, as well as flight duration and distance travelled for each entry. The logbooks are constructed of a leatherette exterior with “Flugbuch” and a Luftwaffe eagle embossed on the top cover, and measure 217 mm x 201 mm. Although Knaak made a countless number of flights, it is clear that there is evidence of at least 2000 logged flights in over 30 different airplanes, including the Junkers 87 (Stuka), the (Messerschmitt) BF 110, and the Focke Wulf 190. Also included in this grouping is Max Knaak’s Luftwaffe pilot’s licence, featuring a photograph and several authorization stamps. In addition, included are two discharge certificates issued by the American authorities after the war. One copy appears frequently used and is therefore in poor condition. The other copy is identical to the original, and is in mint condition.Overall, this is an extremely fine group of documents belonging to Oberfeldwebel Max Knaak, a flight instructor who flew over 2000 flights and logged countless hours in the air, in over 30 different planes.
