An Iron Cross 1st Class 1914 by Wagner; Dedicated to Hauptm. F.W. Gentner 1916
Silver frame, with iron core, magnetic, engraved in running script "Hauptm. F.W. Gentner", dated "3. 5. 16" (May 3, 1916) and maker marked "W.G." (Johann Wagner und Söhne, Berlin) on the reverse, 42.2 mm, vertical pinback, scattered surface rust evident on the arms, near extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, pebbled exterior, Iron Cross on the lid, purple slotted medal bed, light wear on the exterior, case also near extremely fine.
Footnote: Uncommon inscribed Iron Cross that has been professionally engraved with the recipient's name, rank and date of award. Johann Wagner und Söhne, Berlin served as an official crown jeweller of Prussian royal family. Hauptmann (Captain) F.W. Gentner served with Infantry Regiment 52 von Alvensleben (AKA 6. Brandenburgisches Regiment). This regiment was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division throughout the war and participated in a number of major actions on three separate fronts: Marne; Somme; Verdun; Kerensky Offensive; Caporetto; and Operation Michael.
