China, Qing Dynasty. A Double Dragon Order, 2nd Class, 2nd Grade, by F.Rothe, c.1890

(双龙宝星). (Shuānglóng Bǎoxīng). Instituted by Guangxu Emperor on the 7th of February 1882. Type I. 1882-1897 Issue. A superb and exceedingly scarce Austrian made award commissioned by the Qing Government for foreign recipients in Western countries. A large award consisting of eight alternating blue and green peddles, obverse centre with blue enamel surround, in accordance with the Statutes detailed in 1882, this second class award presents two ornately designed silver dragons on a gilt background, both circling a polished coral stone denoting 3rd Grade, reverse with hook suspension attachment, Thunder Cloud suspension hallmarked with F.R. for Rothe, as well as the Austrian silver hallmark ("3" Dog's Head "A") denoting 800 silver content, measuring 67 mm (w) x 81 mm (h- inclusive of Thunder Cloud suspension), with light wear and enamel loss from use, elongated and detailed neck loop, with replacement scarlet ribbon, near extremely fine.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
