Instituted in 1896. Of French manufacture, in toned silver, measuring 42.8 mm in diameter, hallmarked on horizontally pierced ball suspension with boars head denoting French small silver guarantee post 1838, with contact, on period ribbon, good/fine.
Footnote: During 1896, the aged Li Hung-Chang became the first Qing Dynasty Minister to begin his world tour with a visit to Russia to represent China at the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II, accompanied by envoys from the Chinese Embassies around the world. During his 190 day visit, he took in four continents and crossed three oceans. While in the United Kingdom, he took in the Spithead Fleet Review, he steamed around Lake Windemere and was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
