In carved bone, with a four character rank designation in a reddish tint and incorporating a cross-hatched engraving, the characters placed vertically in the centre, trimmed with a thin rule along the edge on all sides, a hole placed at the top for suspension, measuring 56 mm (wide) x 133 mm (height) x 4 mm (depth), free of chipping, exhibiting a yellowish tint to the bone, near extremely fine.
Footnote: This Bai is fabricated from carved bone and takes its shape from the tablets borne by the Chinese mandarins. Bone Bai were worn for regular daily usage within the Palace Grounds at Huế. The Imperial City (Vietnamese: Hoàng thành) is a walled enclosure within the citadel (Kinh thành) of the city of Huế, the former imperial capital of Vietnam.
