Japan, Empire. An Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) Photo Album

Hardcover, embossed designs on both the front and back exterior covers, along with the spine, the front cover illustrating a star and IJA "M" design above four kanjis in red and gold in the centre of a large circle within a frame of repeating stars, the Japanese national flag in red and white at the upper left, the flag backed by leafing in green and red, with white cherry blossoms below, Imperial Japanese Army soldier in green and brown at the lower right, with additional images of a train, pagoda, two cavalrymen on horseback and three artillerymen with smoking cannon, with other warlike images on the binding margin and spine, the back cover and its adjoining binding margin with various battle scenes, incorporating soldiers, a tank, various battle implements, a plane, a parachutist, the Imperial Japanese Army war flag, with three gold dust areas to highlight explosions.

There is a personalized owner's label in Japanese on the inside front cover. The lead page is printed in light green, red and gold-coloured inks, illustrating the Imperial Palace fronting a cluster of cherry blossoms on the front panel, the back panel illustrating the silhouette of a soldier with the Japanese flag on a star-shaped background, surrounded by various Army implements and icons. The inside contains 121 photographs, leading with the Royal family, including the 124th emperor of Japan, Emperor Shōwa (commonly known by his personal name Hirohito), his wife, Empress Teimei and their children on the first three panels.

The remainder of the album is dedicated to the Japanese military in all its Second War glory. It illustrates Imperial Japanese Army officers and soldiers, many of which are posed in a studio setting or outdoors, some marching, including large groups, including four large photos with official stamps in red ink, with the other large photo showing Imperial Japanese Army soldiers wading into the water with mountains in the background, exhibiting a torn corner at the lower right but traces of the official stamp remain. These images are taken in Japan, along with tropical or arctic settings. Other photos feature planes, ships, horse jumping, buildings, Mount Fiji, among other subjects. Near the rear of the album are 28 combat-oriented collector cards that are designed like photos, bearing various battle scenes with kanji taglines.

The album features 121 black and white photos spanning 24 two-sided black photo pages, with either a gloss or matte finish, in various sizes, some with a sepia-toned look, many of the photos secured in place with gold-tinted foil Army helmet-shaped corners, the Royal family photos with traditional gold-tinted corners, while the remainder are glued in place. The covers are bound to the pages by two die-holes along the binding margin, both covers with black finished eyelets, with two strands of black cord fed through the holes to secure everything in place. It exhibits a tear on the lead page, with most of the photographs remaining in excellent condition, not having lost their emulsion, a few of the photos loose or are coming away from their assigned positions, the large photos at the back of the album displaying moderate creasing or cracking. Near extremely fine.
