Instituted in 1888 as the highest award of the Order of the Rising Sun. A beautiful and extremely rare decoration, well executed in silver gilt with red enamelled insignia incorporating a red glass cabochon in the centre, mounted to a silver with white and violet enamelled base presenting smooth rays with flowers between each cluster of three white rays, the reverse presents a vertical pinback flanked by dual prongs, engraved with a previous museum code "B620-4420-3037 GC", measuring an impressive 91mm x 91.3mm, weighing 145 grams, minor crazing evident in the white enamels, extremely fine.
Footnote: This Order is conferred in recognition of extraordinary accomplishments in the public and political spheres. It is often awarded to Japanese and foreign notable statesmen, diplomats, judges, former prime ministers, and senior cabinet ministers. Before this award was established as an Order of its own in 2003, it was the highest award in the Order of the Rising Sun.
