Fabricated from cotton, screen-printed with the sun disk in red in the centre, surrounded by multiple hand-painted inscriptions in black ink, with fine reinforced stitching along all four edges, triangular reinforcing patches in the upper and lower corners on the left side, the lower patch housing two intact cotton ties, the upper patch with the ties having been torn off but the stubs of both ties remain, measuring 840 mm (w) x 560 mm (h), exhibiting two large spots just outside the sun disk on the white field, along with soiling overall. Fine.
Footnote: Many Japanese soldiers carried flags adorned with poems, words of encouragement, and patriotic phrases from family and peers. Some were even decorated with artwork. They were often tied to a bayonet or mounted on a rifle. American soldiers brought these home from Japan and often refer to them as "meatball" flags, as did the other Allied forces, due to the Japanese hinomaru or sun disk's prominence on aircraft, vehicles and flags.
