Japan, Empire. An Imperial Naval Officer's Field Cap, c.1941
Exterior fabricated from navy blue wool, with two rows on white cotton rank striping around the circumference, complemented by six reinforced ventilation holes near the top, three on each side. The rear is vented with four reinforced holes, two on both sides, with a navy blue cotton tie fed through the holes to secure the cap in place. There is a narrow leather chinstrap riveted in place on both sides, with a smooth black finished upper and raw underside, the right side of which has severed, leaving a stub in place attached to the right rivet and the majority of the strap attached to the left rivet. Inside incorporating a 32 mm wide leather sweatband, with a smooth black finished upper and raw underside, the dome and sidewalls lined in a hessian fabric, with a diamond-shaped patch bearing an inscription in black ink sewn in place on the left side. The cap measures 160 mm (w) x 240 mm (h) x 110 mm (d), exhibiting soiling overall, along with crazing in the leather sweatband. As worn.
