Insignia & Documents of Surrendered Lieutenant General Fumio Miyashita, sent to United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Arnold (Joseph) Schultz; United States; Captain (Rikugun-Tai-i) Collar Tab (three silvered bronze stars affixed to a red wool base, the piping in Gold-coloured bullion wire in various textures, stiff-framed, olive green cotton backer, 27 mm x 45 mm); two General Headquarters, Army Forces, Pacific Certificates (typewritten, with naming and coding in handwritten black ink, inscribed "GENERAL HEADQUARTERS / ARMY FORCES, PACIFIC / CERTIFICATE / Pursuant to provisions of Section VIII, War Department Circular No 217, 1 June 1944, and USAFFE Circular No 83, 1944, the bearer Joseph Schultz Lt. Col of this certificate is entitled to retain in his possession or to mail the following: Captured enemy document stamped with No CRD 72-45-J-201 (1 item). For the ACofS, G-2, General Headquarters: SIDNEY F. MASHBIR, Colonel, S.C.", on a newsprint paper stock, 164 mm x 205 mm each, horizontal fold mark); Large Note Written in English and Japanese (handwritten inscriptions in black ink in both languages, inscribed "I have the honor in sending my insignia of rank to Lt. Better than very fine.

Footnote: Lieutenant-General Fumio Miyashita was born on November 11, 1892. He served as Senior Adjutant in the Mongolia Garrison Army for almost five years, from July 4, 1934 to January 31, 1939 and during this period, he was promoted to Colonel on July 15, 1938. This was followed by an eighteen month posting as the Commanding Officer for Cadets, at the Sendai Army Training School, from January 31, 1939 to August 1, 1940, then assigned as Commanding Officer of the 83rd Infantry Regiment for two years, from August 1, 1940 to August 1, 1942. Miyashita was promoted to Major General on August 1, 1942 and was appointed on this date as Commanding Officer of the 8th Independent Garrison Unit, a position he would hold for the next five and half months, until January 18, 1943, before being transferred as Commanding Officer of the Infantry Group, 1st Division. After thirteen months, he became Commanding Officer of the 11th Independent Brigade (China) on February 21, 1944, a position he would hold for next thirteen and half months. On April 1, 1945, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General and assumed the role of General Officer Commanding the 160th Division, a fifty-three day assignment, before being attached to the Chosen Army District (Korea) on May 23, 1945, the duration of this appointment undetermined. He died on April 1, 1963, at the age of 70.
