Annam, French Indochina. Kim Tien Special Merit Medal, c.1840

(Sapeque d'Honneur). This award was revived by Minh Mang and awarded for very special merit. In silver, with a square hole in the middle, a circular hole at the top supporting a full-length red neck cord, in addition to a ring with an 84.8 mm long silver pin attached bearing an ornate design, a second circular hole at the bottom with an ornate green silk cord composed of a series of knots tied to a white cord which is fed through the hole, the green knotted cord with three sets of tassels in burgundy, white and blue attached, the neck of each set of tassels with a knotted cord in gold, the medal measuring 42 mm in diameter, light contact, better than very fine.

Footnote: Minh Mạng (May 25, 1791 - January 20, 1841, born Nguyễn Phúc Đảm, also known as Nguyễn Phúc Kiểu) was the second emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty of Vietnam, reigning from February 14, 1820 until his death, on January 20, 1841. He was the fourth son of Emperor Gia Long, whose eldest son, Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh, had died in 1801. He was well known for his opposition to French involvement in Vietnam and his rigid Confucian orthodoxy.
