The set consisting of 1) The Breast Cross; constructed of silver, consisting of eight multi-rayed arms; the obverse with a badge attached via two screws visible on the reverse; consisting of a double headed crowned eagle in Gold, with a central white enameled medallion inscribed “FJ” in Gold lettering, along with chains and “Viribus Unitis” (Latin - United Strength) inscribed in Gold; the reverse with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly, marked “Vincent Mayer’s Söhne, Wien” and “C” for “Commander Star”, “AA” for Vienna manufacture, as well as “VM” on the cross, and a silver hallmark for “900” silver purity; measuring 80.20 mm (w) x 80.13 mm (h); weighing 55.2 grams. 2) The Sash Badge; of hollow Gold construction; consisting of a double headed crowned eagle in Gold, with a central white enameled medallion inscribed “FJ” in Gold lettering, along with chains and “Viribus Unitis” (Latin - United Strength) inscribed in Gold; suspended from a hollow Gold and partially enameled crown, with a horizontally pierced loop suspension; marked “VM” or “Vincent Mayer’s Söhne”, a Vienna assay mark, and a hallmark for Gold construction; measuring 37.24 mm (w) x 69.62 mm (h); weighing 29.9 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
