Instituted on 2 December 1849 by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. II Model. (1916-1918 Issue). A bronze gilt Latin cross with red enameled arms and the imperial double-headed eagle with black enameled details, obverse eagles clutching a loop chain with the emperor’s motto “VIRIBUS UNITIS” (“WITH UNITED FORCES”), obverse centre presenting bronze gilt “FJ” (“FRANZ JOSEPH”) on a white enameled field, the cross is surmounted by the Austrian imperial crown and a green enameled pendilia, reverse with a slender vertical banjo style pinback, a barrel hinge, and a broad catch, maker catouche of Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne Wien, marked with asterix on pin and reverse, measures 39.94 mm x 75.13 mm (h - inclusive of imperial crown), weighs 31.0 grams, excellent quality with only light enamel contact, extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps.
