1875-1914 Issue. (Goldenes Verdienstkreuz). A golden Latin cross with rounded edges, with red enameled arms on the obverse and reverse; the obverse with a central white enameled medallion, inscribed “FJ” (Franz Josef) in capital silver gilt lettering, surrounded by a gold ring, and an ornately decorated white ring of enamels; the reverse with a similar white enameled medallion, dated “1849” in silver gilt numbers, surrounded by a narrow gold ring, and a broad gold ring on the outside; suspended from a swivel crown suspension; with a horizontal loop for suspension from its period original ribbon - marked “V Mayers Söhne, Wien” with an Austro-Hungarian gold mark and Vienna assay mark; measuring 35.78 mm (w) x 56.02 mm (h); weighing 14.1 grams; minor loss of enamel to centre, extremely fine overall.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
