A grouping of four bravery medals and merit medals, consisting of 1) A Silver Merit Medal; consisting of a round silver medal, the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Franz Josef, circumscribed by his name and title; the reverse inscribed “SIGNUM LAUDIS” (Latin - A sign of praise), within an open ended laurel and oak wreath; on a swivel crown suspension, with a replacement loop and a period original ribbon and a golden repetition clasp; measuring 32.10 mm in diameter and 52.96 mm in height including its crown; weighing 19.5 grams. 2) A Bronze Merit Medal; a round bronze medal; the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, circumscribed by his name and title, the reverse inscribed “FORTITUDINI” (Latin - Fortitude), within a laurel wreath; on a loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with incorrectly place triple repetition bars; measuring 31.12 mm in diameter. 3) A Gold Bravery Medal; a round gilded zink medal; the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, circumscribed by his name and title; the reverse inscribed “FORTITUDINI” (Latin - Fortitude) within a laurel wreath; on a loop for suspension without its ribbon; measuring 40.48 mm in diameter; weighing 17.2 grams, 4) A Silver Merit Medal; consisting of a round silvered zink medal; the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Carl, circumscribed by his name and title; the reverse inscribed “SIGNUM LAUDIS” (Latin - A sign of praise), within an open ended laurel and oak wreath; on an attached crown for suspension, with a period original ribbon with crossed swords; measuring 30.70 mm (w) x 46.03 mm (h); weighing 15.5 grams; in overall near near very fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
