(Souveräner Malteseorden). Military Division. A silver gilt Maltese cross with three white enameled arms, 12 o'clock arm remaining a gilt field, with crowned double headed eagles in each quadrant, suspended from arabesques a hollow swivel crown and an ornate Trophy-of-Arms denoting military division, Trophy-of-Arms presenting red and white crest as well as an hand etched reverse, measuring 43.5 mm (w) x 113 mm (h - inclusive of crown as well as Trophy-of-Arms), presented on a detailed and stylized neck ribbon which includes parallel lines of thorn embroidery in silver gilt bullion thereby denoting the Grand Cross class, with minor white enamel loss to both obverse and reverse, very fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
