(Österreichisch-kaiserlicher Leopold-Orden). Instituted on 8 January 1808 by Franz I of Austria.Type III. (1914-1918 Issue). A silver eight-armed rayed star with a central applique consisting of a cross pattée constructed of gilded bronze with red-enamelled arms bordered by white enamel, the obverse centre presents a red-enamelled medallion inscribed FIA for FRANCISCUS IMPERATOR AUSTRIAE, surrounded by a ring of white enamel inscribed INTEGRITATI ET MERITO (FOR INTEGRITY AND MERIT), reverse centre presenting a principle pin assembly, maker marked ANTON REITTERER JUWEILER WIEN IV SCHUBERTG. 24, measuring 95.24 x 94.62, weighing 81.6 grams, and in good condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
