Austria, Imperial. A Franz Joseph Order in Gold, Commander's Star, by Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne, c.1900
(Franz Joseph Orden, Stern zum Komturkreuz). Instituted on 2 December 1849 by Franz Joseph I. Type II. (1914-1918 Issue). A silver star consisting of eight multi-rayed arms, the obverse features a red-enamelled, 18K Gold cross with the imperial double-headed eagle, partially enameled in black, shown in the angles of the cross, the two heads of the eagle bear in their beaks a loop of chain with the emperor’s motto VIRIBUS UNITIS (WITH UNITED FORCES) applied at the lower edge, the white-enamelled central medallion is bordered by a ring of 18K Gold, shows the letters FJ for Franz Joseph in Gold, surmounted by the Austrian imperial crown and crossed swords, the reverse centre presents a principle pin assembly, maker marked with the cartouche of Vinc. Mayer’s Söhne of Wien, star’s body stamped on reverse with C for Commander’s star, pin’s reverse hallmarked with AA, eagle’s feet stamped with maker mark VM and chamois-head hallmark with the letter A and number 3 indicating the Austro-Hungarian Empire, minor-gold items 760/1000 from Vienna, measuring 80.08 mm (w) x 80.05 mm (h), weighing 54.8 grams, displaying superior enamelling and manufacture, and in better than extremely fine condition.
