An example of a “Erinnerungsmedalle für Angehörige des königlich preußischen Kaiser Franz Grenadier Leibgarde Regiments Nr. 2” commemorative medal; a round silver medal; the obverse with a rightward facing portrait of Kaiser Franz Joseph of Austria, circumscribed by his name and title; the reverse inscribed with the name of the medal as well as the date “1849-1899”, all within an open ended laurel and oak wreath; on a loop for suspension from a correct replacement ribbon; the edge of the medal marked with a partial silver hallmark and a partial maker mark; measuring 35.02 mm in diameter; weighing 24.9 grams; light contact marks and light and even patina from age; in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
