A fine grouping of two Austrian medals, consisting of 1) An Austrian Imperial c. 1917/18 Bronze Militärverdienstmedaille, the medal constructed of bronze, the obverse with a rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, circumscribed by Latin script - maker marked “Kautsch”; the reverse inscribed “Signum Laudis” (Latin - Sign for Praise) within a wreath consisting of oak and laurel leaves, on a medal extension and loop for suspension, measuring 31.18 mm in diameter; weighing 20.2 grams. 2) An Austrian 1917-1018 issue, silver bravery medal, second class, third award; the obverse depicting the rightward facing bust of Kaiser Karl, circumscribed by his name and title and marked “Kautsch”; the reverse inscribed “Fortitudini” within a laurel wreath; on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon; measuring 31.17 mm in diameter; weighing 22.7 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
