Baden, Grand Duchy. A 4. Badisches-Infanterie Regiment Prinz Wilhelm Nr. 112 Enlisted Personnel Pickelhaube
(Baden Pickelhaube für Mannschaften). A Baden Enlisted personnel Pickelhaube, constructed of a black vulcan fibre shell. Situated atop the crown is a brass spike perforated along the neck with ventilation holes, and which is secured in place with a baseplate featuring four rivets. A bar of identical construction emanates from the back of the baseplate and extends down to a boiled blackened leather neck guard. Riveted to the peak is an insignia consisting of a Baden griffin wielding a sword and ducal coat of arms, situated above a banner bearing an inscription of “MIT GOTT F. FUERST U. VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR PRINCE AND FATHERLAND”), measuring 12 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (h). It is flanked by brass studs which accommodate an intact black leather chinstrap which is adjusted with dual brass buckles. Secured in place beneath the right stud is a magnetic metal cockade painted in an Imperial red, white, and black tri-colour motif. Completing the exterior features is a protruding boiled and blackened leather visor trimmed along the edge with a brass reinforcement. The interior retains a black leather liner culminating in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet through which is looped an original drawstring. The reverse of the neck guard bears blackened inscriptions of “I.R. 112” indicating distribution to 4. Badisches-Infanterie Regiment Prinz Wilhelm Nr. 112, with a manufacture date of “1911”, and additional initials “I.B.”. The Pickelhaube measures approximately 17 cm (w) x 25 cm (l) x 21.5 cm (h) (inclusive of spike). Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, including material fatigue and scratching of the vulcanfibre shell and leather features, possible replacement of the peak insignia, the loss of the cockade to the left stud, and some distortion of the shell structure. It remains in a very fine condition.
