Baden, Grand Duchy. A War Merit Cross, c.1916
(Kriegsverdienstkreuz). Instituted on 9 September 1916. Constructed of gilded war material in the shape of a Maltese Cross, with a laurel wreath between the arms of the cross, the obverse centre presents the crowned griffin holding a sword in its right hand and a shield with the arms of Baden in its left, the reverse centre presents the crowned cipher of Grand Duke Friedrich II, measuring 37.17 mm (w) x 37.50 mm (h), on loop for suspension from period original ribbon, and in near very fine condition.
