Baden, Grand Duchy. An Order of the Zähringer Lion, I Class Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves
(Orden vom Zähringer Löwen Ritterkreuz I. Klasse mit Eichenlaub). Instituted 26 December 1812 by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich. (1815-1918 issue). Constructed of Gold with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a narrow Cross Pattée with its arms joined through the quadrants by arabesque latticework, the obverse with green enameled arms, bearing a central white enameled medallion with a detailed and hand-painted depiction of Zähringen Castle, set within a ribbed gilt ring, the reverse bearing a central red enameled medallion overlaid by a gilt lion rampant, similarly within a ribbed gilt ring, the twelve o’clock arm with an integral loop connecting to a clasp consisting of three oak leaves, in turn with an integral suspension loop retaining a period original parade-folded ribbon, unmarked, the crown measuring 38.30 mm (w) x 41.92 mm (h), the clasp measuring 21.38 mm (w) x 21.11 mm (h), weighing 20.0 grams overall, in extremely fine condition.
