Portugal, Kingdom. A Military Order of the Christ, Grand Cross Case, by Joaquim Augusto da Costa

This is a very well-preserved case of issue for a Military Order of the Christ, accommodating a Grand Cross with neck ribbon. The frame is constructed of heavy card stock with a textured faux red leather exterior. The obverse lid is decorated with a gold embossed royal crown and initials of King Carlos I, with detailed embossed borders. The interior of the lid features a padded, red, satin-type liner embossed with a maker’s mark of “Joaquim Augusto Da Costa, Fabricante de Condecorações, Rua de S. Juliaõ 110-3°, Lisboa”. Set into the hollow interior is a slotted black felt medal bed accommodating the aforementioned decoration. The case was opened with a functional magnetic metal snap button arrangement, the hardware for which has since been lost, but it retains its functional magnetic metal hinge. The case measures 140 mm (w) x 275 mm (l) x 59 mm (h). Minor, age-appropriate wear and fatigue is evident to the exterior, but the case is in an otherwise better than very fine condition.
