Hardcover, light blue cloth cover, entitled "History of the War in South Africa: A Thrilling Account of the Great Struggle between the British and the Boers, together with the Wonderful Story of the Transvaal" by James H. Birch, Jr., in collaboration with well-known author Henry Davenport Northrop, published by McDermid & Logan of London, Ontario, entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1899 by J.R. Jones in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, District of Columbia. The front cover illustrates a colourized line drawing of British Cavalrymen charging a Boer infantry position, with the text "WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA" above and "BETWEEN THE BRITISH AND BOERS" below in gold-coloured ink, the spine illustrating a colourized line drawing of a standing Boer Infantryman. The previous owner's name and address "Victor Wild / 776 Quebec St" is inscribed in pencil on the inside front cover endpaper. It begins with a Preface, followed by a List of Contents, a Glossary of Dutch Terms and five pages documenting the Chronology of the War. The book is a contemporary account of the Boer War, written from a Canadian perspective and is divided into thirty-eight chapters: I - The Transvaal and Orange Free State; II - The Boers and Kaffirs; III - White Settlers and the Zulus; IV - Manners and Customs of the Boers; V - The Great Powers Dividing Africa; VI - Wonderful Country of Rhodesia; VII - Vast Stores of Natural Wealth; VIII - The Chief City of the Transvaal; IX - Gold and Diamonds in South Africa; X - Cecil J. The book features 118 pages of black and white photographs, paintings and wood line engravings, illustrating various individuals and battle scenes, along with maps, inserted at seven intervals in the book: (twenty-two at the front, plus sixteen each between pages 32 and 33, 48 and 49, 80 and 81, 128 and 129, 176 and 177, 240 and 241), complemented by four colour plates: two at the front of the book (Charge of the Ninth Hussars; Boers Hauling Heavy Artillery to the Front), one between pages 264 and 265 (Charge of Boer Cavalry near Ladysmith), one between pages 296 and 297 (Reconnaissance in Forge of British Cavalry). It concludes with a 60 page Appendix documenting Australasian Colonies in the War. The book contains 730 pages of text and line drawings, printed in black ink, on an off-white paper stock, plus the previously mentioned 118 black and white pages and four colour plates, all of which are printed on a semi-coated white paper stock, the edges of the pages in blue with a speckled/marbeled design, the book totalling 856 pages and measuring 180 mm (w) x 233 mm (h) x 42 mm (d). It exhibits wear and soiling on the cover, along with separation of the cover from body of the book which exposes the underlying mesh support along the spine inside the front cover, the first few pages loose versus the body of the book, moisture damage from storage causing undulation of some pages at the rear of the book, with some of the interior pages with spotting present. Good.
