Cuba, Republic. A Geographic Society Award, Silver Grade, c.1914

An early Cuban badge in silver with green, white, off-white, light blue, dark blue, red and brown enamels, maker marked "aXc" (Adrien Chaubillon, Paris) and marked "950" (silver) on the integral ring, obverse illustrating a ship, its sail bearing a red cross, the ship on a globe featuring the Atlantic Ocean, with Europe and Africa at the right, the Americas at the left, with Cuba highlighted in green, surrounded by an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves, reverse illustrating a map ofCuba on a grid, the Cuban coat-of-arms above and flanked by a mountain at the left and trees at the right, inscribed "SOCIEDAD GEOGRAFICA de CUBA / 1914 /DA OPERAM QUO SPLENDIDA INSULA, QUAM / HABITAMUS, MAGIS AC MAGIS DIGNOSCATUR" below, surrounded by an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves, 57.8 mm x 69.3 mm inclusive of its integral ring, ornate cravat loop suspension, intact enamels, extremely fine.
