Item #GB7366

Price:

$655

Seven-piece construction, consisting of a mahogany wood propeller and its hub base from a de Havilland Gipsy Moth aircraft, both pieces with a smooth finish, along with four legs on the bottom of the hub and an inverted leg on the top in wood, having been added from pieces of furniture. The hub base is dated May 1929 and has had the original two propellers severed, their stubs remaining in place. There is a series of marks stamped on both sides of the hub: one side is stamped "DRG. NO. D.H. 5180/1" above "D.H. GIPSY L.H.", while the other side is stamped "D6'-4" P5'-1" MAY/29" above "ACG 0 13828", the hub itself measuring 370 mm in width x 270 mm in depth x 90 mm in height. The propeller blade is placed vertically into a large slot in the top of the hub, the blade incorporating a copper-coloured metal guard on one edge that runs from its outer tip to within 80 mm of where it joins the hub base, the blade measuring 750 mm in length x 180 in width at its mid-point. A 280 mm long inverted leg bearing a central hole has been slotted at the opposite end and placed on top using the tip of the propeller as its resting place, the junction area between the two measuring 70 mm in length. There are four legs inserted into holes on the bottom of the hub, adding another 270 mm to the height of the rack. It weighs approximately 5 kilograms and measures approximately 1,220 mm in height overall. The propeller is slightly loose versus the hub base, the metal guard exhibiting a few nicks and dents, the hub and propeller remaining in great condition considering their age. Very fine.
